Hainan Daily  2019-01-07 17:30:36

Recently, the Second Affiliated Hospital of HNMU successfully carried out the first pancreas-kidney transplantation in Hainan Province. Mr. Liu, 55-year-old,  who transplanted both pancreas and kidney organs. The entire operation lasted for eight and a half hours. At present, Mr. Liu recovered well, creatinine and blood sugar have returned to normal levels, and he was discharged on January 7. The successful pancreas-kidney transplantation in the Department of Organ Transplantation of the Second Hospital of HNMU has filled the blank in the province's technology.

Patients with multiple organ serious lesions can be cured by combined transplantation

"I have been suffering from diabetes for 15 years, 2 years of uremia, and basically no quality of life before." Mr. Liu talked about the life before the operation. Mr. Liu is a civil servant from Shaoyang in Hunan Province . He developed diabetes in 2003 and has been a companion to insulin. In 2016, he suddenly found that his legs were always puffy and his blood pressure increased. After going to the hospital for examination, the diagnosis was "chronic renal insufficiency (uremic period)". The doctor judged to be chronic renal failure, which is one of the complications of diabetes.

In the two years after the diagnosis of uremia, Mr. Liu can only rely on dialysis three times a week to maintain his life. Accompanied by his wife, he also turned to many large hospitals for medical treatment, but it has not improved. In November 2018, he came to the Second Affiliated Hospital of HNMU for registration. Fortunately, there will soon be a suitable donor.

"The department of transplantation  has comprehensively evaluated that the patient's pancreas and kidneys have serious lesions. The simple drug treatment, or dialysis therapy, kidney transplantation or pancreas transplantation alone can not solve the problem. The only effective cure method is pancreas-kidney transplantation“”. President Wang Yi said that this can solve the problem of diabetes and kidney failure together.

The transplantation team of the hospital fought for eight and a half hours to successfully complete the operation.

At 10 o'clock on the morning of November 24, under the close cooperation of the hospital's transplantation team led by president Wang Yi, the pancreas-kidney transplantation was urgently carried out. The operation took eight and a half hours and the donor's pancreas and kidneys were successfully transplanted into the patient. So far, the first pancreas-kidney transplantation in Hainan Province was successfully completed.

After more than a month of recovery, Mr. Liu’s blood sugar is stable and his creatinine is normal, he can be discharged from hospital. "He has been ill for so many years, and I have been worried for so many years. Now I can finally sleep well." Mr. Liu’s wife, Mrs. Li, said, “I was very excited before the operation, and also a little scared, but we fully trust the Organ Transplantation Team of the Second Affiliated Hospital of HNMU, I really appreciated  the medical staff of the Organ Transplantation Department for their care for my husband."

"I have been ill for so many years. Because of this disease, I always ask for leave in my company. Now I am recovery. I want to do more things for people before I retire." When talking about life after discharge, Mr. Liu is full of yearnings. Mrs. Li, who was packing her luggage at the side, had a smile on her face. She was also looking forward to her new life. "He is recovery now, let him go on his work. When he retire, the world is so big, I will go around with him!"

Since 2018, the second hospital of HNMU has completed 57 kidney transplants.

Diabetes can cause kidney failure for many years, which is one of the serious complications after the development of diabetes, and it is also one of the medically difficult problems.

"Combined transplantation is more complicated than single kidney transplantation or pancreas transplantation." Zeng Fanjun, director of the Department of Organ Transplantation told the reporter that because the blood supply to the pancreas is abundance, the ischemia is also very sensitive, making it difficult to obtain organs and transplantation. it must also be made more refined in terms of blood supply. The operation has very high technical requirements for doctors, and it is a complex transplant operation with high risk in surgery. At present, there are not many hospitals that can carry out this operation in China. For various reasons, this technology has been  a blank  in Hainan.

Presidnet Wang Yi said that there are still many regional hospitals in China that have not mastered the core technology of pancreas-kidney transplantation. This time, the Second Affiliated Hospital of HNMU successfully carried out the first pancreas-kidney transplantation in our province which marks the development of the discipline of organ transplantation in Hainan  entering a new era, bringing more practical news to patients.

It is understood that the Second Affiliated Hospital of HNMU conducted a kidney transplant operation in 1982, which is the earliest hospital for kidney transplantation in Hainan Province. On July 31, 2018, the hospital established the province's first organ transplantation specialist.

Organ transplantation technology has been the focus of breakthroughs for many years. In recent years, organ transplantation has made a new breakthrough in quality and quantity. Since 2018, the hospital has completed 57 kidney transplantations, 3 liver transplantations and 1 ABO kidney transplantation. Soon, the transplantation of solid organs such as heart and lungs will be gradually carried out, and the people of Hainan will not be transplanted out of the island.

Organ transplantation is inseparable from love donation

"Although I don't know anything about the donor's situation, I am very grateful to his love and donation." Mr. Liu is very grateful to the donor. "Without him (donor), without the medical staff in the Second Affiliated Hospital of HNMU, I can't restart my new life. They have given me a second life together. If possible, I also hope to participate in the donation."

The reporter learned from the Red Cross Society of Hainan Branch that the successful  pancrea-kidney transplantation was precisely because a 29-year-old youth donated his own cornea, heart, lungs, kidneys, liver and pancreas after his death. This is the case in which the citizens donated the most organs since the organ donation work started in Hainan Province. The organs donated by him were transplanted to seven people, bringing hope to the seven families

"Organ donation is also the continuation of life in another way." President Wang Yi said that the development of organ transplantation technology is inseparable from organ donation. The level of organ donation determines the level of local organ transplantation. He appealed to the loved ones from all walks of life and the masses to understand the relevant knowledge of organ donation and the way of donation,  become volunteers to let life go further.
