“Walk a few steps, see if you can walk normally, and the wound in the donor area is also healing well!” On December 5th, in the breast and thyroid surgery ward of The Second Affiliated Hospital of Hainan Medical University (referred to as SHHMU), Miss Zheng, a 25-year-old patient, is recovering well post-surgery. It is understood that this is the first successful case of immediate breast reconstruction with gluteal artery perforator flap in China, performed in Hainan.
In July of this year, Miss Zheng, who works in Haikou, was unfortunately diagnosed with breast cancer. After a multidisciplinary consultation involving breast surgery and plastic surgery experts, and considering the patient's needs comprehensively, it was decided to adopt a surgical plan of immediate reconstruction after mastectomy.
Three months ago, Miss Zheng began neoadjuvant chemotherapy, and the tumor shrank after chemotherapy, presenting a suitable opportunity for surgery. On November 26th, a multidisciplinary team from SHHMU, including breast surgery, plastic surgery, and anesthesiology, collaborated and carried out the surgery in a relay manner.
Prof. Mu Lan stated that the surgical technique has several notable highlights: First, the surgery was highly integrated, completing the repair with autologous tissue while excising the cancerous part of the breast; Second, the use of the gluteal artery perforator flap technique in the donor area is a first application in China, and a novelty report has been obtained from the Information Center of Peking University Health Science Center; Third, the preoperative positioning was highly accurate, the anastomosis of blood vessels went smoothly, and attention was paid to aesthetic shaping, ensuring the natural beauty of the breast.
On the sixth day after surgery, Miss Zheng began to move around freely on her own, and is currently recovering well, walking with ease. "I was a bit nervous before the surgery, but now I'm relieved!" Miss Zheng said that the first thing she wants to do after being discharged from the hospital is to go cycling and enjoy the beauty of nature outdoors.
