The Introduction of the Transplantation Institute of Hainan Medical University  

The Institute of Transplantation  of Hainan Medical University (hereinafter referred to as the Institute of Transplantation) was officially established in December 29th, 2017. Professor Wang Yi, who is the expert in organ transplantation, served as the first director.

The organization that the Institute of Transplantation depends on is the Second Affiliated Hospital of Hainan Medical University, which has started kidney transplantation in early 1980s, also is the only hospital that obtains the organ transplantation qualifications in the Hainan Island.

The first organ transplant Department of Hainan officially opened in the Second Affiliated Hospital of Hainan Medical University in July 1st, 2018. Signed that the Institute of Transplantation has officially launched the frontier research and clinical diagnosis and treatment work related to organ transplantation, such as basic medical research, cell transplantation and xenotransplantation.More than one year since the beginning, we not only won the national kidney transplantation, heart transplantation, liver transplantation and lung transplantation all qualifications, but also successfully carried out the first heart transplantation, lung transplantation, ABO incompatible kidney transplantation, split liver transplantation, children's liver transplantation, pancreas kidney transplantation and other highly difficult organ transplantation of the Hainan Province. The types of transplantation and the number of liver and kidney transplantation ranked first in China.

In the past two years, under the leadership of Professor Wang Yi, the Institute of Transplantation gathered and introduce superior talents or teams from all disciplines at home and abroad, by enriching clinical practice of organ transplantation department and rapidly improving its influence in the whole country. We constructed a transplantation medicine team, around the goal of tackling major diseases dominated by organ failure, rely on multi-fields or multi-disciplines such as the basic medicine, transplantation medicine, clinical medicine and of xenotransplantation, combing clinical application and basic research, we focus on the major disciplinary issues that need to be solved towards the future development direction of transplant medicine.

The transplantation medicine team has four plates of solid organ transplantation, cell transplantation, xenotransplantation and basic research of transplantation, seven professional directions of liver transplantation, kidney transplantation, lung transplantation, heart transplantation, cell transplantation, xenotransplantation and basic medical research on transplantation,and several supporting specialties like determination of brain death, anesthesia, examination, pathology, ultrasound, etc. Including 1 president of the International Cell Transplantation Association, 1 academician of the American Academy of medicine and Bioengineering, 5 Leading Talents ,4 Top Talents of Hainan Province, 18 other high-level talents, and more than 40 other professional and technical personnel.

The Institute of Transplantation is designed into clinical department and basic department. The clinical department is responsible for solid organ transplantation (heart, liver, lung, kidney, pancreas transplantation or combined transplantation) and cell transplantation, and the basic department is responsible for basic research of transplantation medicine and research of xenotransplantation.

The main objective of the clinical department is to provide a rich source of clinical research cases for the basic department by completing more than 300 transplants every year. Based on the transplantation of solid organs (heart, liver, lung, kidney and pancreas), we will build a first-class clinical center of transplantation medicine in China. To form the main destination of tourism and medical treatment for organ transplant patients in China. To establish a variety of transplantation cell resource bank for treatment indications, to provide a variety of cell therapy preparations for clinical selection, and to formulate a series of national standards for the preparation of cell preparations.

In addition to providing basic research services such as tissue matching and drug concentration detection for organ transplantation clinical department, the basic department also provides basic research on cardiovascular disease and other transplantation medicine. Using the important achievements of the current xenotransplantation team, we will accelerate the completion of preclinical research on pig human xenotransplantation, strive to complete the world's first pig human xenotransplantation, and realize the biological industry chain related to gene modified donors.

At present, the Institute of Transplantationis in charge of one major scientific and technological project of Hainan Province entitled "Research on key technologies before clinical xenotransplantation", and one scientific and technological achievement of "key technologies and clinical applications of ABO incompatible kidney transplantation" is applying for the first prize of scientific progress of Hainan Province. More than 20 SCI papers have been published in well-known journals in the field of organ transplantation, such as translation, translation international, translation immunology, xenotransplantation, and other famous journals, such as Diabetes, Bio materials, PLoS One, etc.

The Institute of Transplanting is striving to build the national transplant doctor training base of One belt One road, by the opportunity of the constructing of free trade island and  National One belt One road Strategy. We will develop wider and deeper international exchanges and cooperation, and to train transplanting medical talents worldwide, make Hainan become the industry highland of transplanting medical talents training, and improve the international status and influence of Hainan free trade port in the medical industry.
