Department of Neurology
The Department of Neurology at the Second Affiliated Hospital of Hainan Medical University was established in 1994, making it one of the earliest independent departments of neurology in Hainan Province. Through the dedicated efforts of generations of neurologists, it has evolved into a distinguished team renowned within the province for its distinct disciplinary characteristics and exceptional professional competence. Keeping pace with the hospital's development, the department has expanded from its initial capacity of over 30 beds to currently operating 195 open beds, including 12 beds in the Neurological Intensive Care Unit (NICU). It has established specialized facilities including a Neuropsychological Assessment Room, Autonomic Nerve Function Examination Room, Sleep EEG Monitoring Room, and an Endovascular Intervention Team. The department's subspecialties encompass: Cerebrovascular Diseases, Neurointervention, Neurocritical Care, Neurogenetics and Neurodegenerative Diseases, Epilepsy and Paroxysmal Diseases, Central Nervous System Infections and Immune-mediated Diseases, and Neuropsychological and Sleep Disorders. All subspecialties have advanced concurrently. The department pioneered the establishment of a Neurocritical Care Unit in the province, and the procedure volume of its endovascular intervention team consistently ranks among the top in Hainan. It implements comprehensive, full-course management for dementia, cognitive impairment-related diseases, and Parkinson's disease, continuously introducing new technologies and projects to enhance clinical service capabilities.
Integrating medical care, teaching, and research, the Department of Neurology is a core component of the hospital's Brain Science Center. The discipline boasts 3 doctoral supervisors and 5 master's supervisors. In the past five years, it has secured 4 national-level projects, 7 provincial key projects, and 10 bureau-level projects, publishing 81 high-quality research papers. The department comprises 121 medical staff (including 1 flexibly recruited talent and 1 jointly appointed professor), among whom are 11 Chief Physicians, 8 Associate Chief Physicians, 3 Associate Chief Nurses, 7 individuals with PhDs, and 4 PhD candidates. The Department of Neurology is currently designated as a National Health Commission Advanced Stroke Center, an Advanced Cognitive Disorders Diagnosis and Treatment Center (under construction), and a Training Base for Primary Care Professionals in Cognitive Disorders. It also serves as a Local Training Unit for the Chinese Medical Doctor Association's Neurocritical Care Physicians, a Member Unit of the National Brain Injury Evaluation Quality Control Center, the Chair Unit of the Hainan Provincial Stroke Prevention and Control Professional Committee of the Preventive Medicine Association, and the Lead Unit of the Hainan Society of Neurology's Dementia and Cognitive Disorders Group.
