The Department of Respiratory and Critical Care Medicine of The Second Affiliated Hospital of Hainan Medical University is a key clinical specialty in Hainan Province. The academic leader is Dr. Wang Jing, who holds the titles of chief physician, professor, and doctoral supervisor.
The department currently has 78 medical staff, including 3 chief physicians, 9 associate chief physicians, 1 professor, 1 associate professor, 1 doctoral supervisor, and 2 master supervisors. It has 3 inpatient areas with 105 open beds, and is equipped with a bronchoscopy room, a thoracoscopy room, and a pulmonary function testing room.
With strong technical strength, the department has established 7 professional groups: Respiratory Interventional Diagnosis and Treatment Group, Respiratory Critical Care Treatment Group, Pulmonary Tumor Diagnosis and Treatment Group, Perioperative Management Group for Lung Transplantation, Chronic Airway Disease Diagnosis and Treatment Group, and Infectious Disease Diagnosis and Treatment Group. Its capabilities in respiratory endoscopy intervention and perioperative management of lung transplantation rank among the advanced levels in China.
Respiratory Interventional Technology: Equipped with world-leading diagnostic and therapeutic equipment, the department currently performs over 4,000 bronchoscopy, thoracoscopy, and other interventional procedures annually. It routinely carries out endobronchial ultrasound (EBUS) and level-3/4 respiratory endoscopic surgeries, with technology reaching the advanced domestic level. This significantly improves the diagnosis and treatment of diseases such as benign and malignant airway stenosis, large airway tumors, bronchial foreign bodies, pleural lesions, severe pulmonary conditions, and complex infections.
Respiratory Critical Care Technology: It routinely conducts non-invasive/invasive respiratory support, bedside continuous renal replacement therapy (CRRT), and inhaled nitric oxide therapy. These technologies provide comprehensive monitoring and support for the functions of vital organs such as respiration and circulation in critically ill patients.
Perioperative Management of Lung Transplantation: As a member of the only team in Hainan Province with lung transplantation qualification, the department has completed perioperative management for over 30 cases of lung transplantation and combined heart-lung transplantation, reaching advanced domestic and international levels.
Digital Therapy: It adopts advanced digital therapy for the management of chronic diseases such as chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). In 2022, it was awarded the "Digital Therapy Clinical Trial Center" by the Hainan Provincial Health Commission.
The department holds the qualification for national drug clinical trials and is currently conducting multiple Good Clinical Practice (GCP) studies. It undertakes a number of projects funded by the National Natural Science Foundation of China, Hainan Provincial Natural Science Foundation, and the Health Commission. It has published dozens of papers in SCI journals and core journals.
The department undertakes undergraduate teaching, standardized resident training, and the training of master's and doctoral students. It has edited multiple undergraduate textbooks and standardized resident training textbooks, undertaken 2 teaching reform projects, and been repeatedly rated as an "Excellent Teaching Department".
It offers continuing medical education courses on pulmonary function, respiratory interventional therapy, and severe infections across the province. Its "Standardized Diagnostic and Therapeutic Technology for Flexible Bronchoscopy" has been listed as a "National Health Commission Key Promoted Health Technology Project", and the hospital is designated as the leading unit for the joint promotion of this technology. In 2024, it was approved as the Hainan Provincial Training Base for Restricted Respiratory Endoscopy Technology.
