The respiratory department of the Second Affiliated Hospital of Hainan Medical University is a provincial key clinical subject through the efforts of several generations of academic leaders. The respiratory department integrates outpatient department, inpatient ward, respiratory endoscopy center and pulmonary function room. It is responsible for medical treatment, teaching, scientific research and preventive health care. There are 50 medical staff in the respiratory department, including 2 chief physicians, 4 associate chief physicians, 4 attending physicians and 3 residents. 8 of them are postgraduate students. The department consists of three units, including respiratory intensive care unit, general ward and comprehensive treatment ward for lung tumors. It has subspecialties such as pulmonary infectious diseases, chronic airway diseases, critical respiratory diseases, respiratory interventions, pulmonary vascular diseases, lung tumors and so on, each of which has 1-2 discipline backbones.

The outpatient department is divided into general outpatient service and expert outpatient service. The long-term management of chronic respiratory diseases such as asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, pulmonary heart disease and lung cancer making patients effectively diagnosed and treated.

The respiratory intensive care unit (RICU) is equipped with 8 beds. It has professional technical team and advanced equipment, and has obtained rich clinical experience in the treatment of severe pneumonia, severe asthma, pulmonary heart disease, pulmonary encephalopathy, pneumothorax, pulmonary thromboembolism, massive hemoptysis, respiratory failure, acute adult respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS), multiple organ dysfunction syndrome (MODS) and other diseases.

There are 15 ventilators in the RICU, including 6 invasive ventilators, 6 non-invasive ventilators and 3 high-flow nasal cannulas. Each bed is equipped with a monitor, which has an invasive hemodynamic channel. The RICU also has a blood gas analyzer, two defibrillators, two bedside fibro-bronchoscopes, various infusion pumps and micro-pumps, and so on, which provide a strong guarantee for the rescue of respiratory critical illness.

The respiratory endoscopy center is divided into bronchoscopy room and medical thoracoscopy room, which provides a powerful guarantee for the diagnosis and treatment of airway lesions (such as narrow, foreign matter and tumors) and pleural diseases. It has the latest I7000 host system in Olympus, Japan, which is equipped with 4 bronchoscopes. It also has the endoscopic workstation in Albo, German, which is equipped with high frequency electrocoagulation, laser, argon, electric resection, snare and freezing and other endoscopic interventional equipment. These equipment can help us carry out painless endoscopy, cold and thermal ablation treatment of benign and malignant airway stenosis, balloon dilation and stent placement of airway stenosis, removal of tracheal foreign bodies, closure of tracheobronchial fistula, etc. In addition, we also have a rigid medical thoracoscopy made in STORZ of German for the diagnosis of pleural disease and local interventional treatment of pleural tumors.

The pulmonary function room has three jaeger pulmonary function instruments, including one plethysmography, which can carry out the measurement of pulmonary ventilation, diffusion, bronchodilatation test and provocation test. These equipment can provide evidence for us to differentiate the cause of chronic cough, judge the position of airway obstruction, evaluate the severity of lung function loss and evaluate the surgical tolerance and possibility of postoperative complications. In addition, lung function test can also be used for physical examination to evaluate labor intensity and tolerance evaluation. We have held provincial pulmonary function continuing education for many times, and trained grassroots doctors to improve basic-level medical services for serving the health of grassroots.
