Established in June 2021, the Department of Thoracic Surgery Ward 2 (Lung Transplantation Department) of the Second Affiliated Hospital of Hainan Medical University is the chairman unit of Hainan Provincial Lung Transplantation Quality Control Center, a standardized training base for cardiothoracic surgery, and the only department in Hainan Province qualified for lung transplantation.
Led by Professor Sun Wei, a nationally renowned thoracic surgery expert, the department currently has 31 medical staff and 51 open beds. Adhering to the concept of "Standardization, Professionalism, and Leadership", it focuses on standardized, precise, and minimally invasive surgical diagnosis and treatment of thoracic diseases.
It has set up 4 subspecialties, including Lung, Esophagogastric Junction, Lung Transplantation, and Mediastinum & Chest Wall (covering thoracic trauma), forming a comprehensive ward for thoracic diseases featuring a standardized diagnosis and treatment system for thoracic diseases and lung transplantation technology.
Among the medical team, 75% hold a master's degree or above, including 1 chief physician, 2 associate chief physicians, and 1 master's supervisor. The nursing team includes 1 associate chief nurse and 7 senior nurses. Upholding the tenet of "Patient-Centered and Medical Skill as the Core", the department is committed to building a first-class discipline in China.
Professor Sun Wei, director of the department, serves as a member of the Lung Cancer/Esophageal Cancer Special Committee of the National Cancer Quality Control Center, and holds academic positions in the Chinese Medical Association, Chinese Medical Doctor Association, Chinese Anti-Cancer Association, and Chinese Medical Education Association. The discipline develops in a comprehensive and systematic manner:
The minimally invasive rate of lung cancer surgery exceeds 95%. Single-port video-assisted thoracic surgery (VATS) covers high-difficulty procedures such as lobectomy, sleeve lobectomy, vascular plasty, mediastinal tumor resection, and total thymectomy.
It took the lead in carrying out tubeless thoracic surgery (lobectomy, segmentectomy, mediastinal tumor resection) in Hainan Province.
It conducts precise pulmonary segmentectomy (without preoperative localization), thoracoscopic and laparoscopic radical esophagectomy, transhiatal esophagectomy, and "tubeless and diet-unrestricted" enhanced recovery after surgery (ERAS) mode.
It performs high-difficulty surgeries such as double sleeve lobectomy, tracheal tumor resection, autologous pericardial plasty for vena cava replacement, intrapericardial pneumonectomy, and segmental sleeve resection. Its surgical treatment of chronic empyema and mediastinal abscess ranks leading in Hainan Province, with grade IV surgeries accounting for over 90%.
It has completed the first robot-assisted (RATA) radical lung cancer surgery, precise pulmonary segmentectomy, and radical esophagectomy (Mckeown) in Hainan Province.
It obtained the qualification for lung transplantation in 2018.
It has completed a total of 34 cases of single-lung, double-lung, heart-lung combined, and ECMO-bridged emergency lung transplants, with patients aged 15 to 72 years old.
In 2021, it successfully performed the first independent lung transplant in Hainan Province.
It took the lead in comprehensively promoting "tubeless thoracic surgery (Tubeless)" in Hainan Province, reducing perioperative secondary injuries and completely improving patients' surgical experience.
It actively explores AI technology to assist in the diagnosis and treatment of early lung cancer, 3D reconstruction for precise localization, and postoperative big data analysis to optimize the efficiency of diagnosis and treatment.
Professor Sun Wei has published more than 40 papers in SCI and core journals, and participated in the formulation of a number of national-level diagnosis and treatment guidelines and consensuses.
In terms of scientific research projects, the department has won 1 second prize and 1 third prize of provincial scientific and technological achievements, presided over 9 new technologies in thoracic surgery in the hospital, and participated in national multi-center research and scientific research transformation.
It trains more than 10 standardized training physicians annually and offers postgraduate courses in thoracic surgery.
Professor Sun Wei supervises 5 postgraduates, focusing on the balanced development of clinical and scientific research capabilities.
It regularly holds thoracoscopic surgery live broadcasts and technical training, filling the gap in thoracic surgery live broadcasts in Hainan Province and promoting the experience of minimally invasive technology.
It integrates the concepts of "precision surgery", "enhanced recovery", "tubeless surgery", and smart healthcare into teaching practice.
