Department of Infectious and Tropical Diseases, Wards I & II - Introduction
The Department of Infectious and Tropical Diseases, Wards I and II, at The Second Affiliated Hospital of Hainan Medical University, formerly the Department of Infectious Diseases established in 1955, is now a Key Discipline of Hainan Medical University, a Provincial Level I Clinical Key Specialty (Infectious Diseases) of Hainan Province, the Provincial Designated Treatment Unit for Major Infectious Diseases, and a National Drug Clinical Trial (GCP) Base for Infectious Diseases. It is currently establishing several centers, including the Hainan Provincial Clinical Research Center for Tropical Diseases, the Provincial Clinical Key Specialties (Infectious Diseases, Tropical Diseases), the Hainan Tropical Disease Research Center, the NHC Key Laboratory of Tropical Disease Prevention and Treatment, the Hainan Branch of the National Clinical Research Center for Infectious Diseases, and the Hainan Branch of the National Center for Tropical Disease Research.
To address the specialized treatment and management of multidrug-resistant tuberculosis (MDR-TB) in Hainan Province, the former Health and Family Planning Commission utilized resources from Wards I and II of the Department and part of the Department of Laboratory Medicine to establish the "Hainan Provincial Tuberculosis Hospital" in December 2017. Designated as the province's sole designated unit for severe and drug-resistant tuberculosis in 2011, it has standardized the diagnosis, treatment, protection, and management of severe, refractory, and drug-resistant TB patients across the province. It has also strengthened teaching and research on drug-resistant TB, playing a positive role in reducing TB infection rates, preventing transmission, and improving MDR-TB cure rates, which is crucial for achieving Hainan's "Healthy Island" goal.
Hainan Provincial Tuberculosis Hospital is equipped with fully functional auxiliary departments and a comprehensive outpatient system. Its TB laboratory is the only one in the province capable of performing a full range of tuberculosis tests. To date, it has treated over 700 MDR-TB cases with a clinical improvement rate exceeding 90%. It performs over 50 bronchial artery embolization procedures annually, significantly reducing mortality in TB patients with massive hemoptysis. Other procedures include bronchoalveolar lavage, and respiratory interventional therapies for pulmonary TB and endobronchial TB. In 2022, it established a pathogen next-generation sequencing (NGS) platform, pioneering this technology independently within the province. In 2023, it created a dedicated blood purification room for patients with special infections, using dedicated machines to address the challenges of hemodialysis for infectious disease patients, such as those with TB and AIDS.
Over the past five years, the department has secured 1 national-level project, 10 provincial/ministerial-level projects, and 9 prefectural/institutional/university-level projects. Faculty have published over 30 SCI papers as first/corresponding authors, with the highest single-article impact factor reaching 33.883.
It serves as the professional training base for the Clinical Medicine (Tropical Medicine Class) program at Hainan Medical University. The course "Infectious and Tropical Medicine" has been selected as a National First-Class Undergraduate Course cultivation project. "Infectious Diseases and Tropical Medicine" has received university-level grants for "Ideological and Political Education in Curriculum" and "Curriculum Ideology and Politics" demonstration courses.
Department of Infectious and Tropical Diseases, Ward III - Introduction
I. Department Overview
Ward III (Infectious Diseases) of the Department of Infectious and Tropical Diseases at The Second Affiliated Hospital of Hainan Medical University originated from the hospital's Department of Infectious Diseases founded in 1972. On July 1, 2019, as part of the hospital's strategic development plan, the Tropical Diseases Division was formally established, becoming the first clinical department for tropical diseases in China. It was renamed Ward III (Infectious Diseases) of the Department of Infectious and Tropical Diseases in 2023. Since its inception, the department has received numerous national and provincial honors. From 2019 onwards, it has been recognized as a Hainan Provincial Level I Clinical Key Specialty, the Hainan Branch of the National Clinical Research Center for Infectious Diseases, the Clinical Base of the NHC Key Laboratory of Tropical Disease Prevention and Treatment, the Hainan Provincial Clinical Research Center for Tropical Diseases, the Hainan Provincial Clinical Research Center for Infectious Diseases, and a Key Discipline of Hainan Medical University. It currently has 46 inpatient beds, 12 physicians (including 6 with postgraduate degrees, 5 with senior professional titles, and 1 Master's supervisor), and 27 nurses (including 4 with senior professional titles and 1 Master's supervisor).
II. Medical Services
The department specializes in the diagnosis and treatment of various complex liver diseases, management of complications from cirrhosis due to any cause, and rescue treatment for liver failure. It also handles common and frequently occurring diseases in tropical regions (e.g., scrub typhus, dengue fever), investigation of fever of unknown origin, and management of infectious diseases affecting various body sites and sepsis. Scope of services includes:
Clinical diagnosis and treatment of tropical characteristic diseases: Melioidosis, Scrub Typhus, Dengue Fever, Malaria.
Clinical diagnosis and treatment of various liver diseases: Viral hepatitis and related cirrhosis, Alcoholic liver disease, Drug-induced liver injury, Autoimmune liver diseases, and other liver disorders and their complications.
Clinical diagnosis and treatment of infectious diseases: Infectious diarrhea, Bacillary dysentery, Human Streptococcus suis infection, Typhoid fever, Cholera, Tetanus, Rabies, and various parasitic diseases; Infections of various body sites (e.g., respiratory, urinary tract, central nervous system, skin and soft tissue) and management of septicemia, sepsis, and septic shock.
Diagnosis and treatment of HIV/AIDS and various opportunistic infections: e.g., Cryptococcal meningitis, Talaromyces marneffei infection, Pneumocystis jirovecii pneumonia.
Others: e.g., Fever of unknown origin, Lymph node tuberculosis, Tuberculous pleurisy, Tuberculous meningitis and other forms of extrapulmonary tuberculosis, and clinical diagnosis and treatment of other tropical diseases.
III. Research Work
The department focuses primarily on research concerning end-stage liver disease and tropical diseases. It has secured over 20纵向课题 (vertical research projects), including grants from the National Natural Science Foundation of China, Hainan Provincial Key R&D Program, and Hainan Provincial Natural Science Foundation. Notably, collaboration with Hainan Medical University and the team of Academician Kwok-Yung Yuen from the University of Hong Kong on scrub typhus diagnosis and treatment has significantly improved diagnostic rates, reduced severe cases, and achieved preliminary clinical translation of tropical disease research findings.
IV. Teaching Work
The teaching faculty places great emphasis on the training of young teachers. In addition to annual departmental teacher training, key faculty members are sent to the United States to study teaching methodologies. Many young teachers have achieved excellent results in teaching competitions. Dr. Zhang Liyuan, representing the university, won second prize in the National Young Teacher Lecture Competition and also secured second prize in the "Teacher Ethics and Style" speech contest organized by the Provincial Department of Education. The department offers tropical characteristic courses such as "Infectious and Tropical Medicine" and "Tropical Disease Prevention and Treatment" for both undergraduate and postgraduate students.
Conclusion
By implementing a comprehensive development plan for the Department of Infectious Diseases, we aim to enhance clinical service standards and research capabilities, providing better medical services to the local population and achieving the goal of managing serious illnesses within the province ("serious illness without leaving the island"). Simultaneously, we will cultivate more professionals in infectious diseases, promote academic exchange and collaboration within the field, and contribute significantly to the prevention, control, and treatment of infectious diseases. It is our hope that through relentless efforts, the Department of Infectious Diseases will achieve even greater development and progress in the future.
