Since 2015, under the leadership and unremitting efforts of Director Li Biao, thoracic surgery has been further developed. In terms of subject construction,  it passed the assessment of key disciplines of Hainan Province in 2019 which strengthened the advantages and condensed the development direction, played an exemplary role in the development of thoracic surgery in the province. At the same time, it is also the chairman of the Hainan Provincial Anti-Cancer Association Esophageal Cancer Professional Committee, the Deputy Director of the Hainan Provincial Anti-Cancer Association Lung Cancer Professional Committee, and the vice president of the Hainan Provincial Medical Association Thoracic Surgery Branch.

In terms of subject cooperation, the department has exchanges and cooperation with many well-known domestic hospitals such as Shanghai Chest Hospital, Shanghai Pulmonary Hospital, Fujian Cancer Hospital, and Sichuan Cancer Hospital to promote the development of the discipline while benefiting the patients in the province and making them enjoy the same level of treatment as well-known hospitals in China.

In the team communication, the MDT discussion team of the small pulmonary nodules has been established, that means the multidisciplinary team diagnosis and treatment mode, to improve the standardized diagnosis and treatment level of thoracic surgery related diseases, to carry out "patient-centered" case discussion and multidisciplinary comprehensive diagnosis and treatment. The patient develops the most optimal treatment plan;

At the technical level a number of special techniques have been developed including: segmental resection, thoracoscopic radical resection of lung cancer, thoracoscopic intraoperative small pulmonary nodule localization, and thoracoscopic laparoscopic radical esophageal cancer surgery. Thoracoscopic mediastinal tumor resection, thoracoscopic sympathetic nerve dissection for hand sweating, thoracoscopic thoracic deformity, bronchial and pulmonary double sleeve resection, and carousel surgery for lung cancer, esophageal cancer, and gastric cancer Cancer simultaneous radical surgery jejunum replacement esophagus and neck anastomosis.

In clinical teaching, we undertook the teaching tasks of specialties, undergraduates, postgraduates and international students of Hainan Medical University, and at the same time assumed the discipline of teaching in foreign sciences; 

At the level of scientific research,  we undertook the project of the Natural Science Foundation of Hainan Province in 2013(now completed). the Hainan Provincial Health Planning Commission project in 2016,Undertake the key research and development project of Hainan Province (social development direction)  in 2019. We also published many SCI articles and domestic core journal articles.

In terms of talent transportation, in order to improve the medical technology level of young doctors, standardize medical behaviors, and improve the level of medical services, our department has exchanged and cooperated with many thyroic surgery centers in the province to shorten the gap between medical treatment technology and promote talent exchange. 

In terms of personnel training, Director Li Biao was hired as a master tutor in the Department of Clinical Thoracic Surgery at Hainan Medical University. At present, he has trained two masters.He focuses on cultivating students' clinical skills while also paying attention to the improvement of students' scientific research.

Team Development and Construction

There are a total of 47beds and 21 medical staff. It is a team that is united, collaborative, enterprising and energetic. It has always provided patients with quality services with serious and responsible work attitude and superb medical skills.

In the construction of the medical team, there are currently 1 chief physician, 2 deputy chief physicians, 2 attending physicians, 3 resident doctors and 2 master students.c

In the construction of the nursing team, there is currently one deputy director nurse, 3 supervisors and 8 nurses. The rational talent team construction makes medical and nursing a mutually beneficial medical team.

Disease Diagnosis and Treatment

1. Benign and malignant lung diseases: lung cancer, metastatic lung malignant tumor, benign lung tumor (pneumonia pseudotumor, pulmonary hamartoma, pulmonary myxoma, etc.), tuberculosis, lung abscess (lung abscess), bronchopleural fistula , lung amebiasis, bullous bullous, pulmonary cyst, pulmonary arteriovenous fistula, pulmonary isolation, pulmonary fungal disease, pulmonary hydatid disease.

2. Esophageal and benign diseases: esophageal cancer, cardiac cancer, esophageal diverticulum, achalasia, esophageal smooth muscle tumor and cyst, esophageal perforation, gastroesophageal reflux disease, esophageal hiatus hernia, congenital diaphragmatic hernia, esophageal burns, etc.

3. Mediastinal tumor: thymus tumor, thymus-induced myasthenia gravis, mediastinal neurogenic tumor, mediastinal teratoma, mediastinal primary lymphoma, mediastinal cyst.

4. Pleural disease: pleural effusion, pneumothorax, chylothorax, pleural tumor (localized or diffuse pleural mesothelioma), chest wall repair and reconstruction, empyema removal, chronic empyema fibrectomy.

5. Tracheal diseases: tracheal tumors, tracheal stenosis, tracheal trauma and so on.

6. Chest trauma: rib fracture, sternal fracture, open pneumothorax, tension pneumothorax, hemothorax, traumatic spasm and so on.

7. Chest wall disease: thoracic outlet syndrome, funnel chest, chicken breast, chest wall tumor, chest wall tuberculosis, etc.

8. Others: minimally invasive surgery for hand and foot hyperhidrosis and long QT syndrome.
