Dermatology and Venereology Department
Overview
I. Overview The Department of Dermatology and Venereology at the Second Affiliated Hospital of Hainan Medical University was established in the 1980s. After years of development, it has become a comprehensive discipline integrating clinical services, teaching, and scientific research. The department holds several "first" honors in Hainan Province: it is the first and only National Standardized Residency Training Base for Dermatology and Venereology, and it is Hainan Medical University's first and only site authorized to confer both Master's and Doctoral degrees in Dermatology and Venereology, signifying its important role in discipline construction and talent cultivation. Currently, the department has a medical team of 23 members, including 4 with senior professional titles and 6 with intermediate titles. The team includes 1 MD and 6 Master's degree holders. II. Medical Services The department boasts a well-established medical service system. Its inpatient ward has 20 beds, handling over 1,000 patient discharges annually. The outpatient clinic accommodates over 60,000 visits per year and performs more than 6,000 surgical procedures annually. Outpatient services include specialist clinics, general clinics, a psoriasis specialty clinic, and special needs clinics. The department diagnoses and treats a wide range of conditions. It is equipped with several specialized diagnostic and treatment units, including a laser room, treatment room, and mycology laboratory, enabling proficient management of common and frequently-occurring diseases within the specialty. It also possesses strong capabilities in handling rare diseases, critical illnesses, and complex conditions (such as toxic epidermal necrolysis, drug reaction with eosinophilia and systemic symptoms, bullous diseases, connective tissue diseases, and special and severe infectious diseases). Key performance indicators, including diagnostic accuracy rate, treatment effectiveness rate, cure rate, and successful rescue rate, have reached advanced levels within the region. Department experts have been repeatedly invited to contribute to the development of national diagnostic and treatment guidelines and expert consensus documents. While continuously strengthening its specialized capabilities, the department provides targeted assistance to primary healthcare institutions, facilitating complementary advantages and resource sharing with designated support hospitals, and actively promoting the implementation of the healthcare reform goal of "managing serious illnesses within the island." III. Scientific Research In recent years, the department has published over a hundred papers in various academic journals and participated in compiling or translating 4 textbooks and monographs. It has secured funding as the lead unit for one project from the National Natural Science Foundation of China and one from the Hainan Key R&D Program, along with 4 projects from the Hainan Natural Science Foundation and the Hainan Provincial Health Commission. The research focuses on the pathogenesis of skin diseases, providing theoretical support for advancing the discipline and informing clinical practice. IV. Teaching Work As a key teaching base, the department bears the significant responsibility of cultivating professionals for the industry. It currently undertakes the undergraduate teaching tasks for clinical medicine and psychiatric medicine majors at Hainan Medical University. Leveraging its Master's and Doctoral programs and its residency training base, the department emphasizes the integration of theory and practice to enhance trainees' clinical skills and scientific research thinking. To date, the department has cultivated over 10 Master's graduates and 1 doctoral student (currently enrolled). Most graduates are employed in tertiary Grade A hospitals in Hainan Province and surrounding regions, making important contributions to the cultivation of senior talents in dermatology and venereology for the area. In the future, we will seize the opportunity presented by the Hainan Free Trade Port construction to focus on the development of precision medicine and smart healthcare. We aim to optimize the management of chronic diseases like psoriasis, deepen scientific research collaboration domestically and internationally, strive for breakthroughs in psoriasis pathogenesis research, and continue to promote the diffusion of high-quality medical resources to lower-level facilities, thereby contributing to the continuous improvement of regional healthcare standards.Detail>>
